Course
Graduate Courses
- BiostatisticsI,II (2 credits,2 credits)
Prof. Ohashi and staff
These courses aim to introduce and discuss recent progress in biostatistical methodology. These courses are given in a seminar-style and the materials are chosen from recently published advanced textbooks and expository/research papers. Students taking part in this seminar are expected to have basic knowledge on biostatistics and epidemiology. Topics recently discussed and to be discussed include design and analysis of clinical trials in oncology, longitudinal data analysis, categorical data analysis and Bayesian methods.
- Epidemiology and Preventive Health Sciences I (2 credits)
Assoc.Prof. Hashimoto
This course aims to introduce and discuss recent progress in epidemiological methodology. This course is given in a seminar-style and the materials are chosen from recently published advanced textbooks and expository/research papers.
- Epidemiology and Preventive Health Sciences II (2 credits)
Assoc.Prof. Hashimoto
Design and interpretation of some topics in epidemiology such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and pharmacoepidemiology are discussed for providing practical skills and concepts of epidemiology.
Undergraduate Courses
- Required Courses
Epidemiology and Biostatistics (2 credits, lectures)
Prof. Ohashi and Assoc. Prof. Hashimoto
This course provides basic principles and concepts of epidemiology and biostatistics and covers the following items: introduction of epidemiology, introduction of biostatistics, variation and reliability of medical data, indices of health status and disease occurrence, standardization of indices, sensitivity and specificity of diagnostic tests, evaluation of risk/effects of intervention, basic statistical inference, bias and confounding, methodology of medical research, and utilization of health statistics.
- Statistical Methods and Information Processing (2 credits, practice)
Prof. Ohashi, Staff and Affiliates
As a simulation of medical research, randomized trials or case-control studies are conducted in a collaborative way. Through this practice (planning, protocol development, execution, data analysis, reporting), students learn basic concepts and skills of information retrieval, critical reading of research papers, protocol development, computer utilization, and data analysis/processing using SAS.
Elective Courses
- Applied Mathematics (2 credits, lectures)
Prof. Ohashi
Some topics of probability theory and matrix algebra are discussed for providing basic mathematical skill and concepts which are required for understanding methodological details of medical statistics, especially, linear models and multivariate analysis.
- Design and Analysis of Epidemiological Research (2 credits, lectures)
Prof. Ohashi, Staff and Affiliates
Methodological aspects of design and statistical analysis of epidemiological (or clinical) studies are discussed through critical review of research papers or review of specific research fields: the topics discussed include (1) asthma death and beta-agonists (pharmacoepidemiology), (2) passive smoking and lung cancer (risk assessment), (3) cholesterol lowering experiments (large scale clinical trial), (4) nutrition epidemiology, (5) air pollution(environmental epidemiology).
- Medical Data Analysis (3 credits, lectures and practice)
Prof. Ohashi, Staff and Affiliates
Lectures on statistical methods frequently used in medical literature are provided with practice in the PC-SAS environment. The methods covered are: (1) comparison of 2 groups, (2) correlation and regression, (3) analysis of variance (including repeated measurements analysis), (4) categorical data analysis (Mantel-Haenszel approach, logistic regression), and (5) survival analysis (Kaplan-Meier estimate, log-rank test, Cox regression).

Research Project
- Biostatistics and Theoretical Epidemiology (by Dept. of B./E.P.)
The aim of this project is to develop biostatistical and epidemiological methodology for designing clinical/epidemiological research and analyzing data. Recent topics include: survival data analysis, analysis of pharmacokinetic data, the random effect model and the computer intensive Bayesian approach. Many research projects involving data analysis are carried out with the collaboration of clinical researchers in a variety of clinical fields such as cancer, diabetes and vascular diseases.
- Methodology and Information Systems for Clinical Trials (by Dept. of B./E.P.)
This project aims at developing statistical methodology for the design and analysis of clinical trials, especially early stage cancer clinical trials and prolonged large scale randomized trials. This project also tries to conduct fundamental research for establishing efficient and reliable information systems. Recently we started a series of research or QOL assessment including development of scales, validity study and comparison of scales.
- Health Care Data Management and Data Processing (by Dept. of B./E.P.)
With the increasing activities of health sciences and the prevalence of computers, more and more health care data have become available in machine readable forms. This research project aims at the development of the health care data management and processing methodology, including health care data coding, health care data processing, information systems for health care research and ones for information retrieval.
- Descriptive Epidemiology and its Application (by Dept. of B./E.P.)
The purpose of this project is to describe the distribution and trend of health-related states including AIDS and intractable diseases. Main sources of information are vital and health statistics.
- Pharmacoepidemiology (by Dept. of B./E.P.)
The objective of pharmacoepidemiology is an assessment of benefits/risks of drugs by using epidemiologic approaches. Because of the rare occurrences of adverse effects, the utilization of established data-bases and record linkage techniques are expected to be useful tools for research. We have established a system (J-PEM) of data collection on the benefits/risks of drugs similar to Prescription Event Monitoring (PEM) in U.K. with the collaboration of the department of Pharmacoepidemiology.
